Sometimes I find that established photographers forget what it was like to be starting out and learning the ropes. It seems that they forget that in order to get your foot in the door you have to learn, make mistakes and more than anything build your portfolio. It’s not easy to get your footing and find your confidence.
It’s so much more than figuring out all the technique or even finding your own style, it’s also about creating a business. It’s about relationships with clients and about your work being worth something.
I’m also trying to do all of this while not being able to afford a lot of the things that would make the process easier. I’m trying to find ways to do quality work while not ending up in the poor house. It’s not easy to manage, it helps that I know a decent amount about building websites and html.
So in the end I have to do a lot more work behind the scenes. I have to do all the work on my website while putting together quality work for clients and also trying to learn as much as I can. I do this all while working 40 hours a week and commuting 15 hours a week.
I’m not trying to ask for pitty, just a reminder to all the photographers out there who maybe forgot what it is like to start from scratch. Some of us are just doing the best we can with what we have. We all had to start somewhere.
